ବଉଳ ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା (Baula Amabasya or Bakula Amavasya)



Baula Amabasya (Odia: ବଉଳ ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା) is a typical Odia festival. This Amabasya is also known as Bakula Amavasya or ବକୁଳ ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା in Odia language observed on the Pausa Amavasya (Odia: ପୌଷ ଅମାବାସ୍ୟା) according to the Odia calendar.

According to the Georgian calendar, this festival is celebrated in the month of December or January. The festival is mainly dedicated to the Mango trees (ଆମ୍ବ ଗଛ). The mango trees bloom with the new flowers (in Odia it is known as Baula) for the fruits.

A special type of cake (ପିଠା) is prepared for this festival and is being offered in temples. The pitha prepare on this days is called as Gaintha Pitha (Odia: ଗଇଁଠା ପିଠା). This pitha is also offered to Mango trees. According to some legends, this ritual is performed to get more mangoes.

The Puja also performed near the Mango Trees with Baula (The flowers of the tree) on this day. That's why this festival is named as Baula Amavasya.

On this festival, there is a special pooja organized in Puri Jagannath Temple. In the morning bhoga, Gaitha Pitha or Khira Gaintha is offered to Lord Jagannath. In some places of Odisha, people use to worship their family goddess on this day by offering the same prasad.
